Benjamin Moore — Regal Select Flat

We wrote briefly last week about the relatively recent introduction to the UK of the paint range from the long-established American company, Benjamin Moore.

Our client Celine selected the paint, in Gravel Gray, and David used it this week on some newly installed joinery.

The verdict from David is that this — the Regal Select Flat — is a great paint, notable for its opacity, coverage and rich, saturated finish.

We can recommend it highly to all painters and decorators in London and beyond, and look forward to using it on future projects.

Paint buffing and polishing techniques

David recently began exploring the rather extensive range of techniques and products available for polishing paintwork. We’ve been surprised at just how far you can go with this stuff…

Put simply, you start with a standard gloss finish — we’re thinking of a front door, here — then set about working your way up through the grades with specialist, super-high-grit abrasives. Polishing fluids are used next.

We’re going to be making these high-end techniques a big part of a competition we’ll be running for certain south Londoners in February 2016.

We’ll be posting more news soon…

Repairing a lath and plaster ceiling in south London

This elegant living room in an Edwardian house in south London required more preparatory work than usual, particularly on the ceiling and on an area of blown plaster near one of the windows.

The condition of the original lath and plaster ceiling, while parlous, was not unusually so — the number of cracks and general instability is fairly common on ceilings of this vintage, which are now well into their second century.
