Repair and redecoration of a panel door

A somewhat cruel incursion had been made into this Victorian panel door during the installation of a catflap.

With the house in southeast London having a new owner, the catflap was no longer needed, but removal required restoration, repair and redecoration of the door.

The team built out the central panel and the lower rail with sheet timber, fitted new beading and finessed the overall finish with 2-part filler and decorator’s caulk — a satisfying and effective job.

Decorating the Myla and Davis hairdressing salon

We’ve just finished decorating the interior and exterior of the new Myla and Davis salon in Brixton.

The expansion of Katya’s business is continuing strongly and we’re delighted to have worked on all three salons, with the long-established Herne Hill salon being joined by East Dulwich in November 2013.

The bold colour chosen for the exterior woodwork and masonry — Railings by Farrow & Ball — works well in the busy central Brixton location.

The carpentry in the interior — mainly 18mm stained birch ply with black powder-coated metalwork  — was designed and built by the skilled team at Made by Jason.

The salon is at 425 Coldharbour Lane.

Sanding a worktop with the Mirka dust-free system

If you set about sanding your kitchen worktop with a powerful sander, and you use it without extraction, the impact on your life will be significant: the air will turn thick, and dust will settle on every single surface with the perfect uniformity of the snow in the John Lewis Christmas telly ad.

Since investing in Mirka’s rather impressive Deros sanding system (a big vacuum extraction unit, a 5m hose, special abrasives and a 150mm sander) we’ve been constantly delighted by its performance.

It really came into its own on a recent outing to sand an oak blockboard worktop.

It made sense to suggest to our clients that we should still be prepared for a bit of cleaning up at the end of the job  — but the system worked so beautifully that not a fleck of dust escaped. We created more dust while hand-sanding the awkward sections around the tap and behind the hob. Great stuff.

Timorous Beasties — Napoleon Bee

An exquisite wallcovering — from the discerning hand of Timorous Beasties — and a job with some notable intricacy all of its own.

This was and the challenge of papering around a pair of detailed door mouldings was carried out with aplomb by Simon.

The paper is called Napoleon Bee, and comes in three colours.

With many thanks to Angela at TB for matching the batch and arranging the delivery of the back-up roll.

Exterior painting — Edwardian window repair and redecoration

We worked hard to bring back these Edwardian fixed casement windows, which were almost destroyed by wet rot.

The open and exposed westerly aspect — combined with the wettest winter on record in 2013/14 — meant that the water penetration was particularly severe.

The team removed all of the damaged timber, treated it and made strong repairs with the excellent Repair Care products.

The photographs below show one and the same window.
